THYROID NODULE ABLATION
WHAT IS THYROID NODULE
These are small abnormal areas detected in thyroid gland. Thyroid nodules are commonly detected even in asymptomatic patients. When small they do not cause problems but when they grow they appear as neck swelling.
IS MY THYROID NODULE DANGEROUS
To know weather or not your thyroid nodule is suspicious you need to first get an USG done. Based on USG report FNAC of the nodule will be done using fine thin needle. Then cells will be tested under microscope.
WHAT IF I HAVE A NON CANCEROUS THYROID NODULE
Cancerous thyroid nodules are much more rare (<20%) than benign nodules and require onco-surgeons.
However benign non cancerous thyroid nodules which are much more common can be without any surgery/ scar. Benign nodules sometimes grow to huge
sizes and require treatment , if they are symptomatic.
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF BENIGN NODULES
- Visible swelling/ cosmetic
- Problem in swallowing
- Voice change
WHAT IS THYROID NODULE ABLATION.
Ablation means destroying the cells by heat benign thyroid nodules can be easily ablated under USG guidance. A small pinhole is made and electrode is places in nodule. The electrode is then activated and the nodule is burnt in a step by step manner. The procedure is painless and is done under local aneasthesia. After ablation the nodule is disappears in 3-6 months.
There is no scar/ surgery involved and patient can go back same day.
