WHAT IS BIOPSY/FNAC

  • In this procedure a small sample is obtained from any suspicious site for testing under microscope
  • In biopsy a small thread like tissue is cut while in FNAC some cells are obtained with the help of a thin needle.
  • The sample is then tested for cancer cells or depending upon indications for doing the procedure

HOW IT IS DONE

  • Guided biopsy/ FNAC are done under USG or CT Guidance after giving local anesthesia.
  • We ca reach any site even most deep seated areas with the help of USG & CT guidance.
  • Biopsy / FNAC can be done from neck masses, Breast lumps, lung nodules, liver nodules, kidneys masses, ovarian masses and any lesion detected anywhere in chest/ abdomen or bones.

DOES TUMOR SPREAD?

It’s a common myth that after Biopsy tumor may spread. There is practically no risk oftumor spread. Any cancer treatment cant start before knowing the cancer type. Hence biopsy is the initial step.

HOW SAFE:

In experienced hads biopsy field is >90 to 95 % and complication ratio are 0.5-2.1. However complication depend upon organ status and location of the target.

CT guided biopsy of 5 mm lung nodule : came out as metastatic adenocarcinoma. Requires exceptional skills to precisely target this tiny lesion
